Trimming gas consumption is a popular theme in the papers and TV. It is also financially beneficial when you consider the sustained increase in gas charges driven on by your central heating. Whilst gas boiler systems have become more efficient in recent years they will typically consume up to fifty percent of all your gas costs. To help you we have detailed below some quick tips to cut your heating expenses.
switch off central heating systems in areas where you do not need it :
Gas heating system radiators are made to be turned on and off. Have a view whether there are any rooms in your home which are not being used and turn off the metal radiator there. If an area of your home is not used frequently it really doesn’t need heating. Also close the entrance door to these rooms when not in use.
Prefer the heating boiler in preference to using a fire :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically managed radiator valves and increase the temperature setting. The chimney will mean that a lot of the heat created goes outside your home, whilst an electric fire appears to give immediate heat it is not as efficient as the heating boiler in heating the room.
Eliminate draughts with insulation
Stop being chilly air flowing into your home means that you do not have to pay for gas to continually heat the air. Doors are often regions where chilled air leaks in so use approved door insulation. You can get foam sealers which will rapidly close any air gaps that have developed between your entrance door or windows and the wall. If you live in an aging home you might be stunned how often these cracks occur. The flame from a candle can help you to see invisible drafts as it flickers when they are present.
A jumper or blanket might mean you don’t need to turn up the heating :
Putting on a sweater will keep you warm rather than switching up the heating. You can save up to 10percent on your heating bills just by reducing the thermostat by 1°.
Your drapes can help to control temperature :
During the daytime if the sun is shining keep the curtains on the sunny side of the house open to heat the interior of your home. Your windows can be the cause of a lot of heat loss at night as outside temperatures fall. This heat loss can be decreased if you close the curtains, if you take this approach over several months you can save large amounts on your heating bills. The thicker the drapes in the better.
Some final advice :
Insulate the hot water cylinder if your gas central heating has one. The hot water tank can hold its heat throughout the daylight if insulated making water ready for you whenever required.
Don’t heat the walls of your home immediately behind the radiators, aluminium foil can be used to reflect the heat trimming this energy loss.
